Château Rouge 2016

Located on the edge of a forest in rural Belgium, this Château dazzles with its deep red exterior amongst the green foliage it inhabits. Entry was straightforward as there was literally no door to keep us out. Over the years - since its closure in 2006 - it has deteriorated badly succumbing to time, neglect and vandals.

The interior doesn't do the spectacular exterior justice and there wasn't much left inside except rubble and a skeletal reminder of a once magnificent building.

The highlight was no doubt the staircase which at least was safe to walk up to the first floor but that was it in terms of seeing beyond ground floor as the first floor and above was far too dangerous to walk through.

Some brief history tells us that the chateau was built in 1889 in Renaissance style and replaced previous chateaus on the site. The Château originally consisted of twelve bedroom, five bathrooms and 2,400 sq/m of living space. Having passed through many owners over the decades the chateau has had many uses such as  children's home and a rest home. Allegedly, the last owner was not in a financial position to maintain the building and hence it closed for good and has been left to decay ever since without use.
